Having picked up the next car at Union station - (looks more like a shopping mall than a train station) the previous day, we headed out of Washington.  Happy to have city life behind us.  We decided to change our plans and head for Shenandoah National Park - there is a 105 mile drive called Skyline Drive which runs on top of the ridge giving views both left and right into the valleys below.  The height ranged from 2400ft to 3500ft - high enough that there was still a far bit of snow around.  The temp outside was a good 15 degrees C so the kids were out in the snow in T-shirts and in Kerrin's case barefoot as well!!

Linda developed a bladder infection they day before - the home remedy of drinking lots of water meant that we kept having to make pitstops....One of these, at a picnic site (closed for the winter) in Shenandoah.  Linda heard some noises outside the long drop, and when she came out looking for a tap, came face to face with a black bear!!  Fortunately it was a baby and mommy did not seem to be around - I did wonder though why Linda's pace back to the car was quite so brisk!!  From the relative safety of the car we then drove around the picnic site to watch the bear.

We were travelling slowly - between pitstops and snow throwing stops we only managed to cover about 35 miles of the park before the sun started setting, so we decided to overnight in the town of Luray.  The Days Inn although pleasant looking had very small rooms and we did not notice that the beds were doubles not Queens....we all felt a little cramped the next morning.
