Lexington is horse country - regarded as the equestrian capital of the world...we saw why! The houses are beautiful - lots of charm spread over at least 2 storeys of house on large plots of land measured in hectares...all fenced with wooden poster fences with horse paddocks.....grass is a status symbol here and these houses had lots of it!! It is the second largest city in Kentucky. 39.4% of its population has at least a bachelors degree....wow....
It was like a giant green kwa-vula without the security and nicer houses!! We decided (foolishly!!) that taking the direct interstate highway was missing the countryside so from Lexington we meandered. This meant driving through the small towns (literally just a strip of houses on the side of the road in places) at low speeds. After 9+ hours, we had gone through London, seen signs to Manchester (starting to wonder if we had changed continents). A town called Hazard was avoided - their main income surely cannot be tourism....
Each town is marked by the appearance of Wendys, McDonalds, Bob Evans (all fast food) Walmart and Walgreens (pharmacy)....almost without exception.
5 minutes outside of Corbin, Timothy's motion sickness kicked in....maybe the egg mayo sandwiches for lunch were not a good idea. Joanna had also decided (we only discovered this later) not to take her motion sickness tablets, so she promptly joined Tim. She held the plastic packet very carefully and let loose her lunch everywhere except in the packet... With that, we arrived in Corbin - now to find a hotel we could afford that would accommodate us....
The Comfort Inn could (third hotel tried) and we totally disregarded the bad chlorine smell in the lobby in favour of getting Joanna and the car de-slimed...
