“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” – Maya Angelou
We left Paducah and headed north over the Tennessee River then made an immediate turn west and wound up in Metropolis, Illinois. There is a gigantic statue of Superman and of course, we stopped for photos. Just down the street from the statue we saw where the river had flooded. Pictures of Harrahs Casio surrounded by flood water are attached.
Riding through the parts of the Illinois farm land reminded me of the Florida Keys, believe it or not, as the road was elevated and had water on either side. Many, many homes and businesses were circled by sandbag walls. These people have been through a lot.
There is a Vienna, Illinois. I asked Gary if he wanted to stop and listen to the boy's choir but he ignored me. It occurred to me that the other Vienna is famous for the boys choir and sausages. I find this a bit intriguing...
Illinois is made up of farm after farm but the roads are very pretty. In fact, we haven't been on a bad road yet if you discount the city street in downtown Birmingham.
Leaving Illinois, we crossed the Mississippi and stopped in Hannibal Missouri, the home town of Mark Twain. His home, his father's business and Becky Thatcher's house (she was a real person??) are still there as is the picket fence of Tom Sawyer fame. Gary wanted to stop and whitewash it but we hadn't eaten and I wasn't giving up my apple...
Miles for day: 440
Total miles: 1264

Comments
Unfortunately, I'm tired so I have nothing witty to comment, just checking in so you'll know I'm checking in! :) Glad you made your next stop safe and sound! Have fun!!
You don't have to be witty. Just say "hello". Many many thanks for the hospitality. We should have taken the rest of that pizza with us. It may have lasted the rest of the trip! Talk to you soon- E.
Sounds like you're having a rough trip....maybe you guys should head back.
Good morning Super Heros. Us here at the office are not quite sure how or where to start with the comments so we will refrain...for now! Seems you are seeing your share of Mother Natures power however, still having a great time. Be safe, have fun and keep the pics coming...we're enjoying them!!!!
It looks like BOTH of you are still smiling! GOOD FOR YOU GUYS! Wayne, thank you for taking the time each night to update the site (and for the photos during the day), don't think gary (small G on purpose) would have the patience. Enjoy the miles!
Embrace every vista in every moment, in a split-second, you're in a different time and place...
Embrace every single one, be it a twister-strewn Birmingham street or a wildflower-strewn meadow - they are both the same - they just are...
See with beginner's mind, with no judgement...just be...
The ghost of Phaedrus rides with you...

I'm just curious - do two "insurance guys" talk about insurance while on an adventure like this?
Not a chance.
What is this "insurance" you speak of?
Superman doesn't need sunglasses...
Love the blog, pops!
Thanks Nato
So, do you have a lot of bugs in your teeth at this point?
