Aug. 2: Got about one hour of sleep on the night train to Irun on the French border, not as bad as last night's train, though, to Hendaye to Biarritz, where there was no room at the hostel, and we had to get a hotel – rip-off.

To Bordeaux. French hostels are open all day – good! Trains in France seem so fast and efficient after Italy and Spain.

To Saumur on the Loire River, swam in an Olympic-sized pool. Crêpes and apricot jam. To the château, neat museum and horse museum. Tour of wine cellar – yum.

To Angers, to Quimperlé, had soupe aux poissons with croûtons and shredded cheese. Brittany and Normandy are lovely – rolling hillsides, wooded and fielded, towns are so picturesque, all white or all stone with red roofs or black roofs, with a church always dominating and majestic, often on a higher central piece of land.
