Something I had promised myself to do on my South America trip was to go horse riding & Vilcabamba was the perfect place. For a 4 hour horse ride through the surrounding mountains for $20 I considered to be a true bargain. The horses that I rode were in amazing condition & were muy fuerte (very strong). As I had never really ridden a horse before I was a bit apprehensive when I was told that my horse was called Tequila. my guide assured me that he was tranquillo. All was fine though the first stretch of the ride however about half an hour in Tequila decided that it was a bit boring & took off into a gallop which naturally took me by surprise. Shortly after this my guide decided it might be in his best interest to change horses to the more tranquillo of the 2, Mandango (same name as one of the biggest mountains near Vilcabamba). The scenery changed from mountain tops to river crossings to overgrown jungle sections which were swarmed with beautiful butterflies. After the change of horse I found Mandango so much easier to gallop & found some confidence when it comes to horses. By the end of the 4 hours I found myself galloping into town & out of the corner of my eye spotted some tourists taking my photo. Well how cool did I feel!!! I relieved that I did not need to dismount in front of them as the coolness would have quickly disappeared when they would have seen i was having trouble walking. Also found quite a few blisters on my hands where I must have been as brave as I thought.
