Don't miss our pictures from this trip.
Just got back from a weekend away to Kenting (pron: Kending). It was honestly one of my favourite weekends so far in Taiwan.
We caught the 9am bus (88 Express) from the Kaohsiung main station (NT$341/person) which took just over two hours to get to Kenting. As we stepped down from the bus onto the road, there was a lady on a scooter, asking "Do you want to rent a scooter?". Why yes, we do we thought. She told Angela to get on the back of her scooter and for me to walk. Angela hopped on and she blasted off into the distance. Luckily I saw them zip into a side-ally just before they got out of sight. I met up with Angela about 5 minutes later in the lady's hotel/scooter rental business' lobby. Angela said that it crossed her mind that she was been taken to a "bad place" when the lady turned down the side-ally. We both laughed after because we kept seeing her throughout our trip and she couldn't have been more helpful.
We rented a scooter (NT$300/day + NT$50/extra hour) from the lady and found our hotel for the night (Lang qin hai Holiday Hotel - NT$1500/Off season, Saturday, Semi Sea View, 3rd floor).
Our friends, Rish and Ash, gave us an itinerary to follow in Kenting since they have been there several times before. First on the list was the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium (NT$450 @ the door, NT$450 through our hotel). It was truly worth the $. All of the exhibits were great, the Deep; Waters of the World; Taiwan; Polar Seas. If you near the area, don't miss it! Thanks to a tip from Ash, we took the scenic route back to Kenting - great for taking sunset pics.
Day two, up early and on the scooter. We did the Kenting National Forest. It's one of Taiwan's 13 national forests and the 1st one we've done. It is very well maintained with asphalt paths most of the way. Seeing the diversity of the vegetation is truly worth 1.5 hours it takes to get to the top. There's a great viewing platform near the top. Make sure you go a level above the cafeteria. It isn't clearly marked and you need to take the stairs.
On the way back, we stopped at Taiwan's most southern point. Nice place to take some pictures.
In all, don't miss the beautiful walks Kenting has to offer. They truly make it a weekend to remember.
