Today was an early start - 7.30am on the coach for a tour of Rome. We left apparently with 3 short as they weren't on time. We went straight to St Peters Square and met our guide - a Belgium. He was great - very professional and at 8am we entered the Vatican City. Public tours do not enter until 9am.
We found it terrific and many photos were taken. I have never seen so many high quality statues or tapestries. The rooms and ground areas were huge and in the Sistine Chapel we had 25 minutes to gaze and appreciate the fine work done by the painters over the years. Unfortunately we were unable to take photos here, but Michelangelo's, Botticelli and Signorelli's work were amazing. They say about 30,000 a day go through the Vatican Museum and Sistene Chapel.
We then had lunch - temperatures were 37 degrees, my foot was hurting with the blister but i soldiered on as one must in these circumstances. Jackie was also feeling a little down after last nights walk so its pleasing to know it is just not me holding her up.
Then we had our local guide conduct us on our tour to the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. He had amazing knowledge and passion as we walked up and down the many steps in this area. Once again many photos were taken. The work gone into the restoration is amazing as was the work carried out by the Romans (or should i say slaves) those many years ago.
We did this tour in the heat of the day and all were drinking heaps of water. Unfortunately one of our tour fell victim to a pick pocket but fortunately all he got was a fan which had a lot of sentiment value to the owner.
After 2 hrs at the Forum and Colosseum we started back to our hotel arriving there about 2.15pm. We were stuffed and decided to have an easy afternoon and got onto writing up postcards, diary updating, swimming in the hotel pool(lovely it was) and sleeping.
hrs sleep and we went to a nearby restaurant and we were enticed into one by a young girl on the footpath.
Jackie and I had pizzas (Artichoke) & (Cabbinara) and beer. They were very tasty and we went staggering back to the Hotel. On the way we bought a 1.5 litre of coke, 1 large beer, 2 cream caramels and a large cake of chocolate. Total cost 6.5Euros. Cheap eh.
Then going home Jackie and I had a small domestic as she said it was quicker to go one way and i the other. We went different ways and yes I won by 300 meters. I would not have told you otherwise.
When we got to the hotel we ate & drank it all. What pigs.
All in all - a great but tiring day. Tomorrow we are on our way to Sorrento.
