  13 Th April.

Our flight from Jogjakarta to Jakarta took an hour. We got in at around 10 AM and had a long wait until our next flight to Phuket at 4 PM. We had some lunch and as one usually finds when waiting around, the hours soon fly by. 4 PM came and we departed on time, thank God. Mark and Louise were picking us up from the airport and the last thing we wanted was for them to have to wait around for a late flight!! The three hour flight to Phuket went well until we started to land. We ran straight into a tropical thunderstorm, this caused heavy turbulence which Cathy and I quite like. It made for an exciting landing amidst all that lightning and rain. We got through immigration quickly, grabbed our packs and headed out.

Sure enough Mark and Louise were there waiting. It was a delight to see them both. They looked well and very brown, so tropical thunderstorm aside the weather here must be good. Mark ran out into the Monsoon and brought their hire car around. It was a brand new Mitsubishi Shogun!! On the way to Khao Lak we did a lot of catching up. It was nice to get news from home. Cathy and I soon realized that Khao Lak was not as close to Phuket as we had thought. It was a 90 Kilometer drive!!! We dreaded telling them we had a 6:30 AM flight to Bali, cringe !! Thanks Mark and Lou we really owe you one!! We got to Khao Lak just after 8 PM, checked into our hotel and headed straight out for dinner. Mark and Lou had been in Khao Lak for three days already and knew the layout of town. They took us to a nice little restaurant and I reacquainted myself with the good old Thai green curry. In fact I had Thai green curry for dinner every night of our four night stay here. We drank some Chang beer and had a good laugh. After the meal we went back to Mark and Lou's Bungalow next to the beach and had a few more for good measure. It was after midnight when Cathy and I finally got back to our room utterly shattered.

We got up late and had a great buffet breakfast, after we checked the hotel out as it was dark when we arrived. It was a nice hotel with a smashing pool. We then had a walk up into town. Khao lak is a lovely low key resort on the Andaman sea. It has a fantastic white beach that is perfect for swimming, Mark and Lou had picked well. At around noon we called in on Mark and Lou. It was decided that we should have a drive up the coast and look for some good snorkeling sites. This took us to an island I forget the name of. Here we found a lovely beach restaurant well off the beaten track. The food was fantastic and I even went out for a swim. Once again it was a great swimming beach but no good for snorkeling. The next day we went off to visit some waterfalls. We visited a couple of waterfalls but our favorite was called Lampi Waterfalls. Here Mark and I swam in the river at the bottom of the waterfalls, very refreshing!! On the way back to the car I did a Tarzan impression on a hanging vine and broke my sandals, bugger!! After dinner that night the four of us went back to our patio and had a beer or two. At the stroke of twelve O'clock we all wished Mark a happy birthday. Cathy and I had bought a Chinese lantern earlier in the day for just this moment. It was great fun seeing Mark launch it and after what seemed an age it finally took flight. The next day we had decided to just hang around the beach. The weather was glorious and so was the laughs. This was our final day here. We had originally booked for six nights way back in December, but three weeks before we were due to fly out we received an e-mail from Air Asia telling us our flight was cancelled and moved from the 11th of April to the 13th of April. No explanation or anything!!  But it didn't really matter as we had sure crammed a lot into the short time we were here.

That night Mark and Lou took us out to a fancy restaurant to celebrate Marks' birthday. The meal was fantastic and we all had a good night. Unfortunately we could not have to many drinks as Cathy and I were leaving in the morning at the crack of dawn and poor old Mark and Lou were taking us to the airport!!  We set off at 4 AM the next morning. At about 5 AM Mark and Lou dropped us off, we said our farewells and Mark and Lou headed back to bed I bet, I know I would have done!!  We had totally enjoyed our stay with Mark and Lou and my face literally ached with laughing non stop over the last four days. Great fun with great company.
