 7 TH March.

We bought our bus tickets for Lagaspi and quickly ran across the road to a Jollibee, the Philippines answer to Mc Donald's. We had a bite to eat and just made it back in time to catch the bus. There was plenty of seats on the bus and Cathy and I had a couple of seats each. We made ourselves comfortable for our ten hour journey. Legaspi is the capitol city of bicol the most southerly state on the Island of Luzon. We had no real intention of stopping in Legaspi, it was just the nearest jumping off point for getting to a little town called Donsol where at this time of year Whale sharks gather just off the coast. I had read you can swim with these huge fish and from that moment we were going to Donsol come hell or high water!!!

The bus stopped just once in the ten hours. We did not at any point see so much as a freeway in the 445 Km to Legaspi. That said it was a pleasant trip and the hours shot by. I had read in the book that Legaspi sits at the foot of another great volcano called Mt Mayon. But hey, I had just spent the last two days at a huge volcano, so who cares? We arrived in Legaspi at around 7 PM, It was pitch black when we arrived and we made our way to the Magayon Hotel. This place was nothing to shout about but it was cheap by PP standards, 20 a night. We have been shocked at the price of accommodation here in the PPs. The food however is cheap and very good. We dumped our bags and headed to the mall ( shopping center ) to get some dinner but by this time it was closing time at the mall. Just our luck, we were starving too!! I ended up having a crappy burger and Cathy said she would rather go hungry and she did.

We woke up early the next morning still very hungry. So we headed out looking for somewhere to get some breakfast. We walked down a couple of streets and turned right. As we rounded the corner we both stopped dead in our tracks. We were both dumb struck and awe struck, almost speechless. For the sight in front us was so magnificent. There in all it's splendid glory towered Mt Mayon. Now this was a volcano!!!! If you asked a 6 year old to draw you a volcano I'll bet my bottom Dollar he or she would draw a spitting image of Mayon. I was completely spellbound.

Mt Mayon stands 2462 M high and is said to be the world's most perfect volcano. It is a perfect cone shape with a little crater at the top and from this little crater a steady plume of smoke emerges. Mt Mayon is also as deadly as she is beautiful. Mayon erupts with great regularity, something like every ten to fifteen years. The last eruption was in 2006. The amazing thing is Legaspi literally sits at the foot of this ticking time bomb!! I have all my life wanted to see an active volcano and I can now cross it off the list. If I live to see another hundred volcanoes I already know I will never see a finer one. When we finally picked our jaws off the floor we had some breakfast. An hour or two later we were sat in a mini van headed to Donsol.
