The long-awaited day has finally arrived when we visit one of the new Seven Wonders of the World – Petra. Our guide has us practically wetting our pants in anticipation as he walks with us through the narrow canyon, called the Siq, to the final dramatic unveiling of the Treasury, perhaps the greatest existing work of the ancient Nabatean Civilization. This is a building we have all seen in the movies and in photographs, but nothing quite prepares you for the experience of rounding the final corner to see this building in all its glory.

But the Treasury is just one of the wonders of Petra. The site goes on and on to reveal a Roman theatre, soaring temples, elaborate royal tombs, the remains of a basilica, and much more. We finish our guided tour in time for a delicious lunch at the far end of the site, then enjoy a free afternoon where those who are avid hikers can climb to the Monastery, and others can explore the site at their leisure. Several of us hike up to the basilica to view the mosaic floor, and then on to the royal tombs. Every angle yields a new astonishment, and some of the most wonderful impressions are the colors of the natural stone itself.

Several of us exit the site via camel and horseback and horse-drawn carriage. After a quick drink at the cave bar, it is back to the hotel for a swim and an early dinner so we can be ready for another very long day tomorrow.
