Today is entirely free for people to do as they please. We had been hoping for beach weather, but no such luck. The internet at the hotel is out this morning, so I eat an early breakfast and rush down to the FedEx store to post last night's blog, and to catch up on emails. When I return to the hotel several hours later, the thunder and rain begin in earnest, and I take it as a sign I should stay in my room and pack and rest for the next stage of the journey.

This evening we gather for a celebratory drink, and to say farewell to one of the members who is not continuing on to Jordan. We share favorite memories, and there are many! Amine and Ali join us for our farewell dinner tonight at Karam in downtown Beirut. It is a fabulous feast with the table absolutely piled with dishes of every variety. I especially enjoyed the chicken livers done in some sort of currant sauce (sweet), and the raw meat (2 kinds) which you can enjoy with onions and strong garlic spread. Zowie!

It is difficult to say goodbye to our local hosts, who have taken such good care of us. There is absolutely nothing to fear about coming here, and one of my most lasting impressions is of local people asking how I like Lebanon, and urging me to tell all my friends to come. I personally cannot wait to come back, and I hope many of you dear readers will come with me next time!
