We say goodbye to nearly half of our group this morning as we begin a tour extension to Slovenia. We have a brand new Mercedes 8-passenger van, and a talented young man at the wheel who just the day before received his Master's degree in Political Science. The short trip to Lake Bled in Slovenia is enhanced by his thorough explanation of the natural, social and political features of his small country. The scenery is dramatic as we see are surrounded by mountain ranges including some that are part of the Alps. Nobody in the group can imagine a place they have been before that ranks above Lake Bled for its stunning beauty. A Castle is perched on a high rock promontory. Mountains surround the lake, which contains a tiny island upon which there is perched a picturesque church. Motorboats are forbidden, so small vessels piloted by men who learned the craft from their fathers row tourists out to the island and back. After touring the island, the villa once owned by Marshal Tito, and the castle above the city, a couple of us make the trek around the island to appreciate its dazzling beauty from every side. Dinner at a fantastic restaurant called Okarina tops a perfect day, as we retire to our hotel rooms with views over the lake to an illuminated castle.
