The group takes different options today, with four of us hiking up the tallest mountain on the island (1,000 meters), three of us taking a beach / pool day, and three others renting a car and roaming the entire island. I'm in the hiking group, and hoping at last to expend more calories than I have been consuming daily.

We start the hike in a mix of overcast and sunny skies, but the higher we go the thicker the clouds become. Soon we are walking in a dense fog which is whipping past us on high winds. It is an ethereal, but somewhat chilly, experience. At the peak we should be able to see all the surrounding islands, but today we can hardly see 10 feet in front of us. There are quite a few people at the summit who have also come in hopes of enjoying the view, but at least we can all say that we have scaled Mount Zeus on Naxos!

We make good time descending to our starting point -- a cute little church, where Dimitris has stored our supplies for a picnic. He sets to work at once, and before we know it has prepared an awesome fresh salad, chicken and rice, eggplant, bread, fresh cheese, and for dessert apple slices drizzled with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon. We continue walking downhill to the village of Filoti where we meet our bus.

Returning to the warmth of our hotel on the sunny side of the island, we relax and swim in the pool and soak in the hot tub before going into the main city of Hora (at the port) for dinner. It is one of the most amazing meals we have had yet, with dish after dish of fantastic food. Stuffed as we are, after dinner our guide takes us to a waffle and ice cream place for dessert. So much for expending more calories than I consume today! We’ll try again tomorrow!
