Reykjavik, Iceland

Dear Readers:

Our flight from JFK arrives about 20 minutes late this morning. Traffic leaving JFK makes it almost impossible for flights to actually take off on time, and ours was about 45 minutes late getting off the runway. Two of our group actually flew out of Boston just to avoid the JFK hassles. One of our JFK group doesn't get his luggage for some reason. He absolutely positive he saw it come off the plane, but they do not have a record of it being loaded on. (It is delivered to the hotel in the evening, proving he was right - it had been on the plane, but for some reason not handled properly by the offloading guys.)

We are all thrilled to learn, upon arrival at our hotel, that the rooms are ready and we can even eat breakfast without charge! After a filling breakfast, I unpack and then tumble into bed for a three-hour nap.

Everyone who has arrived today meets this evening for a walk into the city center for dinner at a lovely restaurant named "Caruso." The food is great, but quite expensive ($40 for a salmon, vegetable, and baked potato dinner, with some garlic bread for an appetizer and water to drink). We're getting a first-hand exposure to the international value of the dollar, which is now so weak.

We leave the restaurant at 9:15pm, and the sun is still well above the horizon. A leisurely walk along the waterfront back to our hotel is brisk and windy, but affords some great photo opportunities.

The rest of the group arrives in the morning, and the tour officially launches. I'll be very glad once everyone (and their luggage) has arrived!

Hugs,
Dan
