Padangbai April 24-26

We have come to the small town of Padangbai in transit to the small Gili islands off the coast of the neighboring island Lombok where we will go in a few days.  For the moment I sit and construct palm-leaf offering trays with some local girls while Jon finds us a place to stay. These girls will make 100 of these today, and everyday!  It's a lot of work to please the gods and spirits but the Balinese turn work into art by putting time, care and thought into each offering, displaying a full range of colors and organic matter.

There is beautiful coral off Blue Lagoon beach. We snorkel for hours each day dodging ladies on the beach selling sarongs and massages. Once your head is in the water looking down at a new world, you completely forget about any cares or worries you may have had before. Child-like
excitement and playfulness pump blood to your heart.  The best thing we saw here was 2 large cuttlefish!  They are really amazing creatures, squid-like with big egg shaped bodies and many tenticles at one end. They are curious creatures, and although shy at first, if you give them space they will stay still and let you get a closer look. At first we spotted just one and slowly followed it until it swam up next to another. They both started displaying blue and red dots on their backs and continued communicating by flashing dark stripes that went rippling down their bodies. Kinda like strobe moving Christmas lights! So crazy.

Happy Earth Day!
