Night bus to Manila

Friday, March 26, 2010

Today is a day for firsts.  It's our frist jeepney ride, our first 12 hour night bus, and our first time with a gaggle of 30 kids following us around town.

We have hours to kill in Pilar before our bus to Manila, so we walk around various streets getting to know the locals.  We happen upon 3 women trying to get a mango out of a tree using a long stick tied to a half a plastic bottle.  They see us approaching and ask Jon for his help because he is so tall.  Within about 30 seconds, so many locals are watching the show and there is huge applause from the crowd when he finally gets the stubborn mango down.  After this we are practically famous and kids are following us around everywhere.

We have a local tailor fix the zipper on Jon's shorts and he says, "You sure have a lot of friends!"

.

We play with homemade tops with the boys (who are awesome at it, they even pick the spinning top up with the string and balance it on their hand) and buy snacks for everyone.  There is one little homeless boy in a red shirt, blue shorts and no shoes who follows us around all day.  He doesn't speak to us and he doesn't get too close, but whenever we begin walking again he is not far away.  We start calling him our guide and our buddy.  Later we buy him ice cream and right before the bus leaves we give him some money and see the first smile from him all day

The bus is "ordinary" (no A/C) and it's hot, fast, and loud, and the music is even louder.  Within the first hour the bus breaks down 3 times.  Good thing the bus comes with 4 guys who know how to "fix" it.  At one point we go around a turn super fast and the tool box goes flying out the door (which of course is kept open) and it sounds like shattering glass.  We think for a second we hit somebody.  Oh god, what did we get ourselves into?!

Eventually, somehow, we end up falling asleep.  We lay out across the back seat and I curl inbetween Jon's legs thinking, "This is love, this is travel."

Check out all the awesome pictures of the kids (taken with my camera for now).
