The true test of the intrepid traveller: the airport overnighter! My forty hour nightmare journey from Perth to Vancouver had a lovely fifteen hour stopover (due to some bad time management on my part) and I really didn't want to pay up to go into Sydney and stay somewhere for the night when the flight was leaving early the next morning. So I decided I'd just stay for the night in Kingsford Smith.

At first it seemed like it was going to be pretty awesome: on the departures level as things thinned out they dimmed the overhead lights, I was sharing a backless/armless sofa bench sort of thing, wide enough to be a bed, with a nice American girl and we both had room to sprawl out and get under sleeping bags. Things were quiet, except for the announcement, every three minutes, that we were to "keep an eye on our belongings at all times." Then at about 10:30, after the last flights were all gone, a guard came along and announced that they were shutting this section down and we had to go downstairs. Here we found the other twenty people who were staying over, crammed into a tiny area of benches (some of which featured armrests, making them impossible to lie down on, and making the armrest-free ones extremely hot property) in a cold, sterile area with extremely bright fluorescent lighting. I hunkered under my sleeping bag and tucked into a book. Then, with an hour of fitful sleep and six or seven of staring morosely at the ceiling, the ordeal was over, the test passed. Time to go home for a month.
