Left Sydney this morning on the Greyhound and took the bus toPort Macqaurie. I"m heading this way to join up with Conservation Volunteers Australia, which I'm hoping will give me an opportunity to muck around in the real Aussie bush.

The views on the way up were incredible; the bus left at 7 in the morning and I was tired, but every time I woke up there was a lovely new vista beyond the window: an endless green valley of gum trees; a red-feathered bird squawking in a pine; cows and horses grazing in a field that seemed suspended above the sea, one cow placidly allowing a bird to perch on its head.

In Port Macquarie I stumbled off and realized I'd forgotten to print out the map for the volunteer house in town. Uh-oh . . . one overseas phone call home later ("Open my email! Read me the directions from the map!") I found the house. It's like a homier hostel, with eight beds packed into two bedrooms. At first it was just me in the house but later a girl named Helen came in, too, with both of us heading to bed early because the leader of the volunteer group is coming early tomorrow to pick us up and take us to the conservation site. I really have no idea what we're going to be doing for the next week, or even where it will be, but I guess that's rather exciting.
