Most of you know that in July of this year I bought the Dixie Pig Guest House and Restaurant in Chiang Mai. Being on the host end of this relationship has given me a more rounded perspective on quality and value in budget backpacker lodging.
I pay the housekeeper 500 baht per month above scale and give her 1 day off per week. If she works that day I pay her extra. Most places give 1 day off per month.
I don't use palm oil in the kitchen for political, health and environmental reasons. I use the more expensive sunflower oil--or sometiimes soybean oil.
I buy organic produce for the kitchen whenever I can. I don't sell bottled water and give free refills from by jug to anyone.
The rooms are cleaned every day and are spotless. I pay extra to get 6 MB Wi-Fi so my guests can connect for their Skype calls and watch You Tube at the same time with no buffering or delays.
Customers truly enjoy these added comforts/ethics.
Each of the above is a choice, and is accompanied by a cost. That cost is built into the price of the room (350 baht per night for a double room-- about $11 USD). You can get a 200 baht (about $7 USD) a night room for 2 people elsewhere (go have a look at the Rose Hotel), but you won't get anything remotely resembling this level of lodging.
One thing I have learned in my travels in SE Asia-- you don't always get what you pay for, but you NEVER get what you don't pay for.
Royal Flora Flower Show in Chanag mai for the next 7 weeks. I have pics on my FB page. Impressive.
