Where I stayed
WM stayed about 40 minutes by motorcycle north of Had Rin at the peaceful and friendly Had Tian resort. It is a family run place, staffed by family with a South African woman named Elzann as manager. (If any reader has ever been to Zackry's in Langkawi, Elaznn is like a kid sister of Neve. Gracious hostess, fussing to make sure everyone is happy, even a small cabal of grumpy Germans).
The bungalow was 300 baht, included was a pool and free wi-fi. Motorcycles could be rented for 150 baht a day (less than $5) to explore.
This place is a gem. The beach is rocky and a five minute moto ride to the north gets you to a beautiful sand swimming beach. They arranged my onward ticket to Malaysia (taxi to ferry terminal, ferry to Surat Thani, bus from Surat Thani to Train Station, and 2nd class A/C sleeper 13hour train to Butterworth)--the whole thing costing me less than $60 USD.
WM strongly recommends staying here if X and noontime inebriation is not your thing on Ko Phangan. And say hi to Elzann for WM and tell her good job.
