Pangadaran is a black sand beach from one of Java's many volcanoes. A tsunami struck here in 2006 killing three thousand.
The internet lady is in her mid 20-s. Wandering Woman asked her where she was when the tsunami hit. Right here (on the beach) says she. Points to her young son and says "He was one year old then. I grabbed him and ran ahead of the water." Pointing to stairs she said--"We are alive because these were close and I ran up. We waited on top and the water did not come all the way up."
Many Indonesians will not swim on the south coast because the waves are strong. We found a cove where the waves are not as strong and swam. The black sand stirred by the currents produce a dark brown hue to the ocean.
WW and WM were the only bule tourists in this busy weekend beach resort. There are many day trippers from Bandung and Yogyakarta, and Fri-Sun weekenders from Bandung and even Jakarta. All women swim in their clothes, some even in jilbab. Almost all men swim in shorts and T-shirt.
There are a few resident bule (Germans and Dutch), but this is strictly an Indonesian resort town. Food was good -- especially shrimp in black sauce pictured below-, did not hear muzzeins at all. Relaxing.
