When I was a little boy I hated to sleep. Struggled to stay awake. My mother loved to tell the story about the time she got frustrated trying to put me to bed and demanded to know why. "Because you don't know what's going on when you are asleep", I answered.
I was a news junkie at 7--read the Washington Star Section A front to back ever day. About Tet, Hue, the Perfume River, the Citadel, Khe Sanh, Hamburger Hill-- far off scary places that I never dreamed I'd see, and some of my older bros reading this wish they never did.
Seeing the huge flagpole in front of The Citadel in Hue from midway across the footbridge over the Perfume River I feel like that little boy again.
Enough about WM-- The views from the 4 hour train ride DaNang-Hue are jaw dropping, cliffside track overlooking the South China Sea.
Lodging in Hue is excellent and cheap. The Imperial City seems a lot like the pics I have seen of the Forbidden City in Beijing--if any reader has been to both your comparison is requested.
Two days here then on to Hanoi on a really, really fancy train 15 hour sleeper ride.
