Got out of S'ville and came to temperate Kampot. Stayed at the delightful Magic Sponge, highly recommended.

Rented a moto and went up the mountain to Bokor.  A sad cultural disaster.

Buddha said we should observe without judging.  This is difficult here in Cambodia.  They seem to want to catch up with the economic success and development of neighbors Thailand and Viet Nam overnight, by installing the roof where they have yet to pour the footings. They signed a long term lease to the South Koreans to manage Angkor Wat.  They issued 6 gambling permits for Sihanoukville-- and the Russian Mafia has moved in and taken over.

And here they have signed a 99 year lease with the Chinese to manage Bokor National Park. This is (was) an abandoned French Hill station built over 100 years ago

The combination of Cambodian lust for money and Chinese disinterest in cultural respect for all people non-Chinese has been a disaster here.  They have built a casino and a 3 star hotel and are building a 4 star hotel, a deep water port for cruise ships, and a tram to bring the passengers from the ships up the mountain to the casino.

They have demolished most of the old buildings, have cemented two, and turned one into construction worker housing.

Hopefully 100 years from now tourists will flock to Bokor to see the ruins of the abandoned Chinese hotel and casino.

It makes me sad to see what has become of Bokor. At least they haven't decimated the church yet - great pictures. Did you guys go to Kep? are all those houses still empty. That was pretty wierd.
