Bungalow
Jungle Hideaway Bungalows, Kuta Beach, Lombok, Indonesia
The Jungle Hideaway at Kuta Beach on Lombok is incredible value. The bungalow---there's only one--is nestled privately on the sand in Kuta Beach. It has A/C, furnished with local ikat and built with quality craftemsnship, has a western toilet and shower, a fridge, and a view to die for from the front porch.
In the US this kind of luxurious seclusion would cost hundreds of dollars a night, but in Kuta Beach, it's about US $14 at current exchange rates. It is true-- you can find cheaper accomodation in Kuta Beach-- some for under $10 US, but you will not be on the beach and enjoy the creature comforts you can find here.
Here are some photos I took from the bungalow, as well as pics of heh owner Greg and his son Willie.. Greg supports every local good cause there is, and is a soft touch for folks who are down on their luck. He hires ricefield workers at the Bungalow, (salary in the paddy is .80 cents US per day), gives them a salary, a place to live, meals, and medicine, and teaches them English. I have met many of his former employees who are now attending University. Also some photos of "downtown" Kuta Beach. It's a quiet fishing village with good surfing, nice beach, and friendly people. Getting there is a bit of a challenge , but isn't that true of everywhere worthwhile you've ever gone?
Wandering_man says check it out. Enjoy your Gaugin moment here.

- And Greg even accepts ex-AFSCME staff people, so we've established he'll take anyone.
