Where I stayed

I realize that I had not written about any of the people I have met, and since it's a rainy day  in Bali and Internet only costs 90 cents an hour, I thought it would be a reasonable way to spend a few minutes this morning.

The first group are a bunch of Rastafarians from Papua.  They congregate every evening on a porch down the alley from where I stay and play guitars and sing.  The one with the hat-- everyone calls him "Bob"  because of his uncanny resemblance to Bob Marley-- and I have hit it off pretty well.  He is most interested in Barack Obama and has never heard an American perspective on the election and race.  After earning my political creds I fessed up that my great grandfather was a slave owner and all of my ancestors fought for the American South in our Civil War.  This took a while for Bob to digest. He speaks outstandinhg English.

Told me there was a party in Ubud where thousands showed up to celebrate Obama's election.  Invited me to a Valentine's Day party at his place-while that will be fun, I'll be in Lombok.

In Papua when the government issues a permit to log or mine the remaining rainforest, they call it "Forest Conversion".  Now there's some Newspeak.

The second is Jenny from Tasmania.  I saw Jenny at my laundry dropoff place sitting on a chair with her foot bandaged and pinky twisted like a pretzel.  I asked if she needed any help, and she told me her story about her moto accident on Lombok.  She's traveling with her sons Ezra and Aaron, who were both clamoring for McDonalds food.

Which brings me to the next cat, an old and familiar enemy. McSurfing.
