We got a sleeper bus but during the daytime so it afforded us the luxury of sprawling across the back seats for a bit of comfort. The bus ride down from the highlands was so strikingly beautiful. The terrain is very similar to Laos since it's really not that far from the border and reminded me of the trip from Lang Prabang to Vang Vieng.  Seemingly that's why the Americans bombed Laos, a supposedly neutral country, back to the stone age as all the VC nipped across the border to seek refuge. Side bar: the film Apocalypse now is based off a guy called Anthony Poe and was actually about him training and fighting alongside the Northern Laotian people, not the Vietnamese. True story.

Nah Trang was a good laugh. Met up with Max, Mark and then Jonny and Marc and all we did was lay around on the beach during the day and drink in the evenings. We spent Super Saturday in Nah Trang watching four matches back to back. Highlight was probably almost getting my ass kicked by 50 rowdy English fans as the drew 1-1 with the U.S in the world cup. Ah, a legitimate reason to support a team that England was playing. That doesn't happened very often.

Next stop Hoi An. One thing about the nightbus. As we were getting all our luggage on I was told by an American/Vietnamese girl that the driver who was holding us all back had slyly said to the other guy working the bus, Vietnamese first, foreigners last. So basically all locals got all the good seats whereas we who'd paid at least three time the price for our seats got the shitty ones. Pfff. Not liking the aggressive nature of these people too much. Not compared to the good natured cambodians and Laotians ( Not including all tuk tuk, taxi or moto drivers as they're in a world of their own)

I hope you are enjoying Vietnam, despite the harrassment. It is funny the different experience people have of different countries - maybe working in Vietnam gave me a very different feel to the Vietnamese (they were really happy I wanted to work there and give something back to Vietnam). I found them lovely people, who would often help you with no expectation of anything in return when you showed interest and respect in their culture. Of course there are those who are trying to sell you things may try and take advantage, as they see that you are Western and thus have a lot more money than them. I found some good natured banter usually sorted it out or just walking away (it may have helped having lived there for a while as I knew what things should cost so could laugh at the ridiculous prices they quoted me when they saw my white skin).

Enjoy the tailors on Hoi An and the ruin in the surrounding area. Also, Mui Ne is a great beach retreat but that would mean heading South again.

See if you notice a difference in the way history is presented the further North you go.

Take care. xx
