Walter is well again (thank goodness). After breakfast we drive to Barraranna Gorge parking area and walk about 2 kms through the Gorge to enjoy morning coffee with the birds and a beautiful close-up view of rocks, mountains and trees. I am happy just to look at birds, so I stay behind with my bird book and binoculars (and water bottle of course). The other 3 keep on walking. I soon discover, it is almost impossible to look at birds (moving targets) with one hand waving flies and the other hand trying to focus on the bird through the head fly net! I hear the most beautiful bird call (3 note call) but can't identify the bird - this one is shy and keeps on calling from a different place, high up on the cliffs. Very frustrating. I decide that I will have to come again (in winter) when there are no flies. I don't mind the cold (at least one can dress for cold).

We decide to drive to Paralana hot springs - the road in some places is very rocky - but our Kia behaves itself very well. The views of the mountains are stunning - reminds me of Meirings's Poort in the Cape. The hot springs are interesting, a billion years old rocks with water heated by radio-active decay. On the way back we stop to look at a wild pear vine (Marsdenia Australis) - also known as bush banana.

We arrive just after 4 pm - tired after a long, bumpy and dusty ride, but what a wonderful environment we have experienced. After a cool down in the pool, we go for a sundowner at the pick and shovel bar.

This is earth quake country. In the reception area is a seismopgraph - where we notice there was an earthquake just after 5 pm today. Anna was in the pool and remember hearing a runbling noise and thought it was a plane taking off.

Anna is master chef tonight and treats us to a lovely pasta dish. I provide the embience (candles stacked amongst the rocks).
