Today we were heading south again, for Tarkarli. The MTDC (Maharastra Tourism Development Corporation) try and flog this place as 'Tahiti in India' on all their advertising. For some reason we weren't buyin' it, but for lack of anything better to do we thought we'd give it a nudge anyway... you never know, we might save ourselves a trip half way across the Pacific.

So we had to ride back through Ratnagiri and then get onto the NH17. As now seems to be the norm, the weather was overcast and raining on and off. I might copy and paste that sentence, I think i'll be needing it over the next couple of months. Some top notch trip planning there...

There must have been some serious rain while we were asleep because half the clothes we'd hung up the night before were wetter than when they started, despite being under cover. So I poured the water out of the boots, threw the semi-dry pants on and we hit the road.

Given the conditions we were plodding along pretty slowly, another day in the saddle. A couple of hours in Ads pulled over with a bit of a problem... his front brake cable, which was already frayed, snapped completely... so no front brake. Compared to what we've ridden in Oz, these bikes don't stop well at the best of times, let alone minus a brake. We couldn't fix it without a new cable, and I think Southern Maharashtra is just outside RACV's jurisdiction, so continue on it was.

We stopped, eventually, (ha...see what I did there!) at the next town to try and get someone to sort it out. The first mechanic we went to couldn't help and pointed us towards a bloke over the road. So we went over the road although unfortunately he couldn't help either. He suggested we try the bloke over the road... this was goin' nowhere!

We tried a couple of places in the next town and stumbled across this absolute legend of a guy. Once Ads showed him the problem he had his lackies on the job, running around town getting a new cable and a couple of other bits and pieces. In a couple of minutes he had the cable in and we were back in business. Then, using his trusty, gigantic log, he bashed the right foot peg back to where it belonged. It got a bit bent during what we'll call the 'incident'. After all that he wouldn't take a cent! Ads eventually managed to give him 30 Rps, but it took some effort. It's been a while since i've seen a 75 cent bill from a mechanic. Thanks for all your help old mate! It's a pleasant change to not get taken for all you're worth now and then.

We got to Tarkarli around 6, and were pretty knackered, so just checked into the first place we found. It takes it out of you mentally being on the bike all day, especially when the conditions aren't so good. I can imagine when the sun's out this place'd be pretty good, although from what i've seen, to call it Tahiti might be a bit of a stretch! I haven't seen a single fuzzy wuzzy!
