Visited today: New York & Canada

We had an early start today: 4.00 am! We had to catch a taxi at 4.30 and as you can't prebook one we thought we'd have trouble at that time of the morning. However, 20 steps from our door the first one we hailed pulled over for us - what a relief. This one drove quite fast but wasn't Fangio - thank goodness.

The plane was only a little one - 50 seats and no screen to watch or play with - quelle horreur! Have to start remembering the French now we are in Canada. Instead of everything being in both English and Spanish now it's in English and French.

We upgraded our car to a SUV, braved the rain and drove had quite a boring drive down the freeway to Niagara, which has a population of 15,500. Thank goodness that by the time we arrived it had cleared up a little.

The Falls are spectacular - there is the straight shaped one which is in USA and the horseshoe ones which are in Canada. You can get very wet just standing on the sidelines. Oh, why did I straighten my fringe this morning? There's so much spray that it looks like smoke and they are very loud. Part of the falls are obscured by the spray.

The Maid of the Mist was great fun. They manage to pack in about 200 people on each boat (they have 4) and all are dressed in blue ponchos. Many thought it was overkill until the boat got close to the horseshoe falls - then it felt as though it was very heavy rain coming down. The roar is fantastic. Everyone is thrilled by the fact that they are under the spray of the great falls and being absolutely drenched.

Time to check in to the Embassy Hotel. What a lovely suite - lounge room with 2 sofas, dining table and flat screen TV, walk through to the mini bar and nuker area which is opposite another area with a sink, a bathroom with a "whirl tub" and a view out the front window and vanity, separate loo and shower, main bedroom with king size bed and flat screen TV and two club chairs aimed at the spectacular view of both falls outside out window - 16th floor. There was a manager's reception with free drinks and nibbles on the 9th floor for 3 hours - spoilt.

The falls at night are even more awesome as they light up in different colors. The whole area at night looks great with all the hotels, the Skytower and a couple of casinos, both on the Canadian side and the USA side of the river, all lit up and vying for attention.
