Had another day on the road today. We had been told about another area nearby, similar to Stonehenge called Avebury, it is the largest stone circle in Europe, and is one of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain. So off we headed. We came across an awesome chalk impression of a white horse embedded into the hill near Avebury - probably done around 1780's.
When we arrived, there had been the summer solstice festival here the day before so there were still plenty of people there, hippies, alternative lifestyle groups, musicians, artists and other assorted individuals. Leon was not impressed with the stones or the people.
I went for a wander and took a few photos. Decided it was time to move on, so went back to Salisbury Cathedral - where we had gone on the 17th but there had been a flower show on that day so could not go inside.
As it was near closing time for the Magna Carta section inside we decide to go and look at that in the Chapter house first. No photos allowed in here but a very interesting room, scenes from the bible carved into the stone as well as the Magna Carta itself.
Then back into the Cathedral, very impressive architecture and furnishings. No pews though, just stackable chairs so the floor can be made into an open area. Lots of tombs and chapels around the sides, some from the 13th century. Took some pics of the outside on the way out and headed for home.
On the way to Salisbury that morning we has passed a pretty little village on the Avon called Fordingbridge so we decided to stop for a couple of pics on the way home. We were both a bit peckish so we thought we should find a proper country pub for a meal, which we did. It happened to be darts night at the one we chose and also free pool night so we had a couple of games of pool and watched the darts competition. Semi professionals here!! Had a few drinks with the locals afterwards and eventually made it home quite late
