Where I stayed
I need to stop off for a night before getting further up into the Northlands. The obvious point was Whangarei. On recommendations I booked into the Bunkdown Lodge. A funny old place run by a lovely couple. It was kind of like their own house with a load of bedrooms for backpackers!
I was not planning to do much here, just sleep and move on to Paihai however I met Ellie who was up for checking out the Whangarei falls, the kauri park and the Abbey Caves. The falls are pretty cool – apparently the most photographed falls in NZ although not the most impressive. Then off to the Kauri park which boasted of tree canopy walk water – which were to be honest a little disappointing as the walkways where more like 2 metres off the ground rather than tree canopy height! Last (but not least) where the Abbey Caves – said to be the caves for the budget traveller.
Me, not really being a fan of climbing into small dark places let Ellie take the lead. Torches in hand off we went down into the dark, dark cave. Oh and i forgot to mention not only dark but wet cave. Wet, water. Lots of water. Some much so that part way in we have to take off our trousers. So there I am wading through cave water in my knickers (classy. Really classy) and I am thinking who's bloody idea was this? Oh, it was mine. Hmm.
It was good fun though and we did see some glow worms but after about 30 mins I was ready to get out of the dark, wet cave. So back we went only to bump into a couple of guys coming into the caves. Still in my knickers. Nice.
