In order to make connections with other people, I've been working on getting to know some of the student teachers in school, as well as playing on two volleyball teams. And while the players on the teams are all wonderful people, volleyball itself is a poor substitute for my greater interest, swing dancing. Judge all you want, but I need to get my fix somehow! And this need to satisfy my happy feet led me to the MelHop2011 in Mellendorf, about 45 minutes away from Walsrode by train. Given the proximity (and lack of affordable accommodation in Mellendorf), I decided to commute each day.
Before the workshop even began, I had a peculiar meeting with a German woman. I asked if she had recommendations for places to eat nearby
Reader, I’ve heard my fair share of stereotypes, clichés, and perceptions about Americans, but none of them have to do with literacy…or illiteracy. No, concerned citizen, I cannot read this menu, just like I couldn’t read the application I filled out for the MelHop2011 workshop that happened to be written in German… The question slightly startled and confused me, but I was able to stay cool and said, “Yes, yes I can read.” I thanked her for her help and sat down to enjoy a schnitzel.
All venting aside, I had a wonderful time at the workshop. Day 1 was a little dull for me, because I signed up for the Beginner Intermediate Course, but reviewing the basics and fundamental technique doesn’t hurt. I also took a beginning Charleston Class, which was great to learn. On the last day of the workshop, I went to a workshop dance
Lebe lang und erfolgreich,
I’d like to give a shout-out to the organizers and participants of the MelHop2011. I had a wonderful time and hope to see you all on the dance floor in the future!
