I am Vathsalya Lakshmi staying at Jagadish Nagar, Bangalore with my husband PraveenKumar Hebbare.
It was almost three months since we went for a long trip. We decided to visit either 'Kotilingeshwara near Kolar or Devrayana Durga near Tumkur. Finally, we zeroed in on 'Kotilingeshwara. We did some research on the internet and found the route for reaching Kolar.
Sunday, 15 March 2009, we got up late and started at 8:10 am (original plan was to start at 6:00 am) as it normally happens during most of the trips. Filled Petrol on Old Madras Road and zoomed ahead. After covering 10 kms, I jumped with joy when my hubby PraveenKumar offered me to take over the wheel. This is my first stint on a highway. I started driving carefully. My hubby hardly allowed me to go beyond 60 kms per hour even though occasionally I touched 70 kms on empty stretches. The traffic was light but the going was slow because of road widening work and diversions at few places.
Immediately after Hoskote we took the wrong route and headed towards Chintamani. We realized it after sometime but decided to go ahead as we saw a board by Karnataka Tourism about Kaivara 30 kms. We reached Kaivara Temple at 10:20 am which is about 85 Kms from Bangalore.  This place has historical significance.  It is believed that Pandavas of the great epic Mahabharata lived here during their exile in the forest (Vanavasa) and Bhim killed Bakasura at this place.
I decided I had enough of driving for the morning and handed over the wheel to my husband. We resumed our journey at 10:40 am. The connecting road towards Kolar was narrow and bad. But we could cover the 40 odd kms in an hour and reached Antargange at 11:40 am.
It was hot and the climb towards the Temple was steep with lot of monkeys snatching food items, cold drink bottles, etc. You have to be careful with your hand bags, cameras etc. After the tiring climb we found the place is a complete disappointment. There was a small temple and a flow of water getting collected in a pool with completely dirty green water. Some useless fellow was taking bath below the flow and further dirtying the pool.
While coming down we saw a monkey had managed to snatch someone's Sprite bottle and was trying to open it. We resumed our journey towards 'Kotilingeshwara at 12:15 pm. The road was wide enough but still single road with lot of small potholes till we reached our destination at 1:30 pm.
We could see the huge Shiva Linga well before we reached the temple. It was a beautiful place with thousands and thousands of Shiva Lingas in different sizes all over the place in rows on either side. In the middle there are three temples. We visited the temples enjoying the beautiful sight of so many Shiva Lingas spread over an area of 15 acres. More than 86 lakhs of such Lingas have already been installed here since 1974. Kotilingeshwara has the distinction of having the biggest Shiva Linga (108 ft) in the world and accompanying it is a 35 ft tall Nandi (Bull). The entire project involves the installation of one crore (Koti) Shiva Lingas of various sizes, hence it is named as 'Kotilingeshwara'. There is a tree with lot of threads tied to it. It is believed that Lord Shiva will shower boons to get rid of their obstacles.
We stayed there till 3:00 pm and started our journey back. On the way we stopped for lunch at 3:30 pm and ate the food we carried. After lunch we noticed that we had taken our halt below a tamarind tree. We plucked some tamarind and resumed our journey at 4:00 pm. After reaching Kolar we took a left turn and took the highway. I saw another opportunity and took the wheel again when I noticed an empty stretch of smooth road. I drove the car till we reached Hoskote and handed over the car to Praveen after seeing the heavy traffic. We reached home at 6:00 pm.
See you back after our next trip. Cheerio !!!
