Flag of Macedonia  , Vevcani,
Sunday, February 28, 2010

The Road that cuts threw Mavrovo National Park offers some great views on the river valley surrounded with green mountains, high and impressive. Further down that road, towards the town of Debar a big artificial lake appears, which could have been beautiful if plastic bottles and other floating garbage wasn't decorating its shores.

The guys that had picked us up were two Israelis and a Macedonian. They were a bit weird but still nice. Michael Jackson was playing in the car, classic hits, and the driver was driving a bit too fast, as a result of which, we almost hit a man on the road and crushed. I sure am glad that did not happen. I guess that is one of the risks of hitchhiking, the odds of ending up with a bad driver (or a psychopath) are pretty good.

After two hours drive we reached the village of Vevchani, in another mountain range, not far from lake Ohrid and the town of Struga. Somewhere before the village, we passed by another artificial lake, that looked really pretty and even natural in a way. Its water was green and it was surrounded with thick forests, some of the trees were half submerged in the water. It looked a bit like a jungle and I wished to go back there with a canoe and explore it a bit better.

Vevchani had a different type of traditional architecture. Red bricks in combination with reddish rocks, this place, with its people and springs of pure mountain water, sure had character.

The rest of our days we spent at the shores of Ohrid lake. It was probably one of the best times to visit this region, cause the tourist season was over but the weather was still warm and the water in the lake was great for swimming.

It was a great trip!
