Oh what a night indeed! I spent the first part of the evening at my host's home, a cute little flat just minutes from the city centre. We ate breakfast for dinner (pancakes, fruit and yogurt, very yummy!) and chatted for a wee bit (he he he.) Then we went to meet some of her friends out on the fringe party scene. We stood around talking for a while, and I got some good insider info on what to see and what to avoid in the rest of Scotland. I had looked through the Fringe guide and had found a show I wanted to see, so I parted their company and went off to find my show.

After first going in the wrong direction, I managed to reorient myself with the help of a local at a box office. It wasn't too far of a walk, and I actually jogged part of the way. It warmed me up and got me there faster. = ) When I got to the show there was only a short queue to get in, but it turned out they were sold out. I didn't let that discourage me, though. I asked if it would be possible to wait and see if someone didn't show for their reserved seats, and then I stood just outside the door. I only had to wait about 40 minutes before they let me in. I ended up missing about 10 minutes of the show, but at least I got to see the rest, and they didn't charge me full price (only 4).

So, the show: fantastic! It started out with several dance numbers. First (once I was in) was a high energy tap dance with 3 dancers. Totally awesome. Second was a very odd man, who did 3 pieces throughout the show. I can't even describe what he did, it was just odd, but very entertaining. The next act was the best of the night as far as I was concerned. It was one girl, well, woman really, probably about 30 or 35, but very girlish. She did a very unique act that she wrote herself. Also very odd. She went through an amazing variation of emotions, bringing her story together with compelling dance moves. In a way I felt like it was something I would do if I were to put together a number. Very expressive, very deep. I was riveted. I talked to her after the show for a while, too, and wished her all the best. After her the odd man performed again, and then there was a capoeira exhibition. If you don't know about capoeira, it is a Brazilian martial art/dance form. Absolutely beautiful to watch. I first heard about it through Kit, and have been interested in it ever since. He taught me some moves, and I have been thinking that at some point I would like to study it. Now I am feeling even more drawn to it. Maybe at some point I will go to Brazil and learn from the source... = )

So, after all the dancing, there was an intermission, and then the second part of the show began: a drag competition! There were 3 contestants, and last night was the 3rd and final night of the competition. They each sang some songs, did some stand up comedy, and tried to win us over. Last year's winner of Drag Idol (the name of the comp) was the host, and she was highly entertaining as well. They all did an awesome job, and I really enjoyed the show!

By the time the show finished, it was about 1:30, so after talking to the dancer girl, I went to find my way home. There were still hundreds of people walking about. The clubs and bars, a lot of them anyway, stay open till 5am! I had no trouble finding my way back home, and it only took about 15 minutes or so. Once home I went through the rest of the Fringe guide to plot out my next few days. Then I finally crashed at about 4am. Needless to say, I slept in again, till about 11. It's now almost 12:30 and time for me to shower and then get out there. I am going to check out the Leith Market today, not too far from here. Sounds a lot like Camden, with the addition of street performers galore! I'm so glad I am here!
