Our Ryokan in
Beppu has an onsen. Not a surprise since Beppu is known for its hot springs, and it is a common vacation spot for Japanese tourists. On Sunday, we took a bus to the Kannawa area to check out the hells (jigoku) which are spots where hot spring pools have been turned into mini amusement parks. We went into the White Pool Hell. It was one of the less tacky ones, and it had some pretty cool fish in its aquariums along with nice landscaping. It started to sleet while we were there, and we actually got snowed on for a few minutes. This was definitely the coldest day of the trip so far, and the dramatic clouds and howling wind made it seem like a Kurusawa film. Amongst the Hells, is the Hihokan Sex Museum that has a very interesting array of historical and comical erotica.
