Ah, the alarm went off at 5 am, I got my gear sorted & packed just before 6 & sat down to breakfast at 6. Got gassed up & on the road by 6:45, planning to be on the other side of Indianapolis before the heat of the day really set in.
Alas the gods of the road had other plans. It was a pleasant start with a surprise view of emus grazing in a field. Couldn't stop by the time it had registered what I was looking at. Turns out it's part of a camp - the Cub Creek Science Camp with a wide selection of animals to look after (porcupines, llamas, lemurs, parrots).
Then all 3 lanes slowed & we were part of an enormous parking lot for 30 min as an accident was cleared. The high 70s jumped to 90F at one point, I did ride on the narrow shoulder to keep moving (cool down).
When we finally cleared the scene, gone were any hopes of arriving before the heat. It was 93 in Terre Haute and another 100 mi to Greenfield where I'd planned to stay. So I pulled into the motel lot where I saw a couple of other bikes & called it a day.
The consolation was a delicious lunch at the China 8 Buffet next door. Wasn't expecting much but what a variety. Sushi, dim sum, various pork & chicken vegetable dishes, rice or noodles, American food, Chinese desserts.
Perhaps tomorrow an early start will lead to better results.
