Well, I packed in a misting rain after a very hearty breakfast (mmm, homemade cinnamon bread) and once again cursed the gps and lack of good road signage following the visit to Parks Cda site at Port au Choix. The center's info and short film were very good and if it hadn't been raining more I might have gone out on the dirt road to the lighthouse a bit further on the point... um, nah, wouldn't have, it's a bleak view from a bleak place.
I did make it back to the Viking Trail and the ride north was notable for really gusty crosswinds and, wait for it, yes, more rain.
But I made good enough time that I decided to visit St Anthony. It's larger than I thought, but not hard to find the hospital and the Grenfell Historic Properties (http://www.grenfell-properties.com/) across from it, just stay on the highway.
I'd spent time in Labrador and knew some of the story of this medical missionary, Dr Wilfred Grenfell. The center is worth the visit.
Then I followed the road to the end of the point to the lighthouse. Parked with others and admired the icebergs, since this is called Iceberg Alley. The wind and rain drove me back on the bike and heading to L'Anse aux Meadows. The B&B in Hay Cove is just before the Park entrance. I drove down to the end of the cape and saw many more bergs. The rain let up a bit, so getting settled in was easy. Another lovely couple running a sizeable place (the main house and a separate house). And she had a production line of bread going. With the promise of a moose dinner tonight, I was feeling very satisfied.
When the time arrived, there were about about 13 of us at the tables. And, oh, my dear, what a great meal. Homemade bread, pickles, tons of veggies and moose that melted in your mouth, followed by partridgeberry pie a la mode and coffee. Five of us lingered on talking of travel, life and favorite things. It was 10pm when I walked back to the main house, still a dusky light to the sky.
It had stopped raining too.
