Week 19 cont... 10/07/2012 – 11/07/2012

I arrived at Palermo (sicily) at about 6:30am and walked to my hostel. I got to the hostel at about 7am and knocked on the door. Being a hostel I thought the reception would have been open 24 hours. BOY was I wrong. They hostel reception opened the door and was soooo grumpy that I woke her up. She asked me to come back in one hour but I told her that I wasn't going to carry my bag around the street for one hour and that ill appreciate it if I could leave my bags there. I left my bags there and then she rudely opened the door hinting for me to come back in one hour hahaha. I went out and grabbed some breakfast at a café. I also bought myself a coffee and it was one of the strongest coffees I had. I came in a little bit bigger version of a shot glass. After breakfast I thought ill walk around and see the town. I firstly headed to the coast area looking for a beach. The coast was all a shipping docking area so then I went back into town and walked around the narrow streets. I went to the Porta Carini, Immacolata Concezion (which was just a building LOL), Cathedral, Teatro Massimo, San Domico and then I walked down the main shopping area and then I came across a market. I walked through the market and everyone seemed to be friendly…more friendlier than the inland Italians. The market was pretty big so I walked around there for a little while. After the market I then headed to the other side of town to see what was there. There wasn’t much there except for small coffee shops and houses. After that I grabbed some lunch and then headed back to the hostel…it was about 12:30pm and I was really tired from the lack of sleep I had the previous night. I walked into the hostel and the reception lady was really apologetic about her rudeness hahaha. It really didn’t bother me, Ive met worse during my travels and I think my patients and tolerance has increased immensely hahaha. I checked in and then went to my room and fell straight asleep. I woke up late afternoon and hen grabbed myself some dinner. After dinner I went back to the hostel and the hostel lady asked me if I was keen on heading to a local pub with some other people staying at the hostel. I went along to the pub and it was quiet good as it wasn’t one of those touristy pubs but actually local. I made some Italian friends there and they were soo nice. I really enjoyed my night there. About late that night some of us got a little tired and decided to walk back to the hostel and call it a night. On the way home we saw a restaurant still open and decided we will grab a small snack. We ended up ordering a massive meal hahaha. After my second dinner we headed back to the hostel and hung around for a little while just chatting.

The next day I woke up early and checked out. My flight back to Rome was at 8:30pm so I left my bag at reception. I wanted to go to two places that day…Mondello which is the main beach and Monreal where I heard is a really nice beautiful place. I caught the local bus to the beach and relaxed there. The beach was really packed with local and it was a beautiful beach. I really loved it and ended up staying there a little bit longer than what I had planned to. I then caught the bus back into town and had lunch. After lunch I thought I will go to Monreal but it was already 3:30 and the bus ride was about 1hr up and 1hr back. I decided I didn’t want to risk going there and heading back late where I then miss my plane to Rome since I had to catch a 40min bus to the airport at about 5:30. I took it easy the rest of the afternoon. I got back to the hostel about 4:30pm and did my online check in. To be able to check in luggage it had to be purchased either on-line (10 euros) or at the reception desk (20 euros). I tried to purchase check in luggage but everytime I got to the payment part of the web page it would let me continue…grrrr. I thought Ill get to the reception desk and try to explain it to them so I could pay the 10 euros rather than the 20 euros. I caught the bus to the airport and made my way to the reception desk. I really don’t think the guy at the reception desk had a clue what I was talking about hahaha. I told him I tried to buy check in luggage and the web site wouldn’t let me. The guy translated that as, 'I cannot buy check in luggage because there is no internet at the airport’. He just kept say, ‘the airport has no internet and that’s why you cannot buy it online’. Hahaha. He then said that once I check in at the check in desk the lady will give me a receipt and I will need to bring it back to him to pay for it…and then he said its 30 euros :-S

I went to the check in desk and checked in my luggage and explained my situation to the lady. She said not to worry about it and that I already have check in luggage included in my ticket…woop woop…score. Im glad the web page where I tried to buy check in luggage from failed…1 to Vino and 0 to plane. Hahaha. I arrived in Rome at about 10:00pm and was going to catch a train to my hostel. The train system is pretty easy but I had to catch two different train which would have taken my about 2hrs and then a taxi from the last station. Hrmmm maybe ill take a shuttle bus into the city and then a train or taxi to my hostel. A taxi from the city to my hostel will only cost me about 15 euros. I went to the shuttle bus stop and the bus driver said the bus leaves at 11pm. I thought to myself, well if I caught the train into the city and then a taxi I will get to the hostel at the same time but for a smaller price. I really couldn’t be bothered and really didn’t want to be catching the public transport on my own at that time of night. I went to the taxi stand and bargained a guy down from 40 euros to 35…woop woop. The guy then walked me across the road and his taxi did not look like a taxi…it looked like a normal car and no taxi picture or anything on the car. I then said im not catching his taxi and will catch one that actually looked like a taxi. He then took his wallet out and gave me his taxi card and showed me his id. Hahaha. I caught his taxi back to the hostel and he ended up being a pretty cool nice guy…except his driving was crazy…160 down the freeway. I didn’t complain because I got back to the hostel in half an hour.

Check out week 20...Seinna, and Florence.
