Flag of United States  , California
Tuesday, October 21, 2008

After our short departure from the United States we were ready and charged up to tackle the great state of California. Of all our time in the US we decided to spend most of our time in California for the simple reason that it has so much diversity from its beautiful beaches, awe inspiring national park, desolate deserts, magnificent forests, world famous vineyards, the entertainment and gambling Mecca in their neighbouring states and glitz, glamour and action we are so used to seeing in the movies. To match this California boasts an equally diverse cultural experience where Native Americans and Asian cultures thrive side by side.

Our first stop in the Golden State was Los Angeles, the gateway to California where almost 20 million passengers a year pass through making it the worlds 5th largest airport. You only begin to understand how big LA is when you fly over it at night and see what looks like an ocean of little flickering lights. From the minute we started our decent to LAX which was still almost 300km away all that could be seen were millions of little lights that make up LA and its surrounding neighbourhoods.

For the first time on our RTW trip we were having a friend, Amber, join us which we were really looking forward to as it had pretty much just been the two of us since leaving the Busabout circuit in Europe. For those who don't know, Amber is a good friend of ours from Dubai and from the minute we told her about the trip she was very excited about joining us somewhere along the road, it just so happened that she was able to make the California road trip. So to make sure we'd get the most of the California experience we decided to travel in relative Californian style, in other words topless!

Not sure of what to expect in the city we decided to set up base in the tourist friendly Santa Monica where we stayed in a cosy little hotel that was close to the beach. We'd only planned to spend a day and a bit in LA as we felt most of the attractions in California lay outside of the city which left us with a one day to cram as much of LA in as possible.

We started early with a 9am studio at Sony Pictures which would give us a little insight into the areas famous movie industry and if lucky spot a few Hollywood celebs. The tour was very interesting and took us through the history of the studio which started with Columbia Pictures before being bought by the Sony conglomerate. We also toured through the various stage sets where hundreds of movies had been shot, most recently the new Dan Brown movie Angles and Demons amongst many others. We were also lucky enough to pass by and say hello to Adam Sandler who was busy making a movie at the studios. He was too busy to stop for autographs and photos but did say 'later guys' as he zipped by in his buggy. For any movie lovers this type of tour is a must and all the studios around Hollywood offer similar tours although Sony's was the cheapest.

After our studio tour we dropped the top and begun touring Hollywood and its surrounding areas. It was a great sunny day and with the wind in our hair (well for some of us) we felt like right at home. We stopped off at Hollywood Boulevard to take a walk with the stars, slowly drove down Rodeo drive for a little window shopping from the safety of our car, cruised through the posh Beverly Hills with its towering palm tree lined streets, through to Bel Air before stopping off at the less affluent but interesting Venice Beach for sunset. We spend the evening taking a walk down the colourful Santa Monica Pier before having a scrumptious Italian dinner to finish off a busy day.

One day was clearly not enough to take in all LA had to offer but the brief visit gave us more than enough reasons to return someday for a more thorough visit. Next stop, Vegas baby!!!
