Monaco happens to be the second smallest country after the Vatican and what they both lack in size they certainly make up for in wealth. Monaco weighs in at a minuscule 1.95 sq km but is home to some of the most wealthy and famous people in the world. Monaco is also famous for its Grand Prix that it hosts every year and we were keen to walk the track as the race takes place in the streets of Monaco. We found that the best way to do this is to pay a 'small' fee and then drive the circuit in a shiny red Ferrari. You have two options; either to dive the car yourself or to be driven around the track for half the price. I eagerly opted for the second option as the traffic was so bad that it would have been a waste to say I drove a Ferrari in bumper to bumper traffic. The average lap time during the Grand Prix is about 1 minute 15 seconds, through all the traffic it took us almost 10 minutes but I was not complaining as we slowly made our way around the track with hundreds of onlookers staring in awe. I often waved to give the impression that I might be famous or something.

Just walking around Monaco you become aware that there is a silly amount of money in this tiny little country. From the $1 million application fee for become a resident to the monstrous luxury cruisers littering the harbour to the countless exotic vehicles cruising about. We were also surprised to find out that this tax haven is entirely funded by the profits of the massive Monaco casino where some of the world biggest rollers come to make and spend gazillions. It was a fun day out but we were happy to get back to a slightly more real world of Nice and hit the beach soon after we arrived to cool off in the beautiful blue sea. Its very clear why this part of the French Riviera is so popular, just wish they could spend more of their millions on a softer beach.
