Maple Lodge, Wellington

The ferry trip across the Cook Straight went a lot smoother than expected; in fact it was plain sailing. Apart from some very strong winds in the straight it was a calm ride. When we arrive in Wellington we realised why the city was often called windy Wellington. The wind was pumping a few hundred knots per hour.

Our trusty travel guide book described our accommodation as cosy and popular. After a few minutes at the Maple Lodge I came to the conclusion that the only thing that would be cosy here would be a cockroach! It was dirty and it stank! We only brought in the bare minimum from the car to avoid getting all our stuff infested or infected and headed off to the city centre ASAP.

Wellington was buzzing with people knocking off work and heading to the pub for a quick drink before going home. We wondered around and had a drink on a side walk restaurant and watched the worker ants go by. A little further down the road we found one of Wellingtons many theatres which had quite a few people milling around the entrance. We popped in to see what all the commotion was about and to see if we could get in on the action. Fortunately we were in luck.

A performance was just about to start which was based on a very popular Kiwi cartoon called Bro Town. Which is basically the Kiwi version of South Park except it is based on real life characters who are Samoan. These real life characters where the actors in the performance which told the story of how Bro Town actually started. Much of the show was very funny and the characters were a hoot. Some of the humour when over our heads but still made a great night out.

For dinner we popped into a restaurant called Sandwich which had a live jazz band playing. We had a few light snacks and some wine before making our way back to the Roach Motel.

Next morning first thing we shook out our clothes and high tailed it out of town!
