Since we were not leaving to go fishing until 1pm we decided to go explore east of Kuta. Wow that was a beautiful drive near the coast. Again, picturesque scenes everywhere! We checked out Segar Beach which was very beautiful and worth coming back to. We also got to go to the Sunday market in town which was a bit crazy but fun (we cannot find mangos anywhere; I guess they are not in season, Travis was really bummed). As we were driving back we saw our friends Sophie & Pablo at a local restaurant and stopped to eat lunch with them.

Then it was time for fishing (Travis had been looking forward to this since he read about it in the States). We drove our motor bikes to a small village further east of Kuta where the captain (the guy who does the motor and navigates nothing too official) lives. Here we parked and got on the boat. Made, the owner of the homestay, got our fishing poles all set up and we started to go. Apparently, we were doing a kind of fishing called trawling (not sure about the spelling) which means you are fishing at the surface as the boat is going. We were out there for an hour or so before our first bite which was not successful, but 10 minutes later Travis brought in a 8-10 pound Mahi Mahi! He was so excited…unfortunately this was our only catch of the day (most likely due to the weather) but plenty big for dinner.

We were trawling around for another 2-3 hours and then we started to see really cool lightning and hearing intense thunder. We were safe from the rain for a while but eventually it reached us. It was such cold rain that it was warmer to dip your hands and feet in the water (a warm shower would have been nice at this point). The captain of the boat was shivering it was kind of sad because it really wasn't that cold at all but I guess when you live in a place where it never reaches below 78F then it would be…

Fortunately, the rain stopped before our 20 minute motorbike ride back. During the ride, Travis had to carry the fish under his feet on the motorbike. All the locals thought it was so cool/funny that this white guy was carrying this big fish. We got a few honks, thumbs ups, and many points and smiles, LOL.

That night we probably ate the freshest fish meal we will ever have. It was so yummy and we got to share it with our friends and Made.  After dinner we had an interesting animal planet show of two geckos trying to catch a praying mantis on the roof of the lounging area. After several cool attempts and a couple of hours of staring at the gecko and mantis (Travis was fascinated), we got to see the gecko catch and devour the poor mantis. Travis was so excited that he got all of it on video.
