Got up at 5am to catch 6am bus to Machu Picchu. Was a bit misty when we got there but I think it added to the whole mystique of the place. Only a handful of people there and it was amazing, made it all the better considering how much effort it took to get there!
Smitty gave us a tour of the place for abuot an hour. There were loads of things to do with the equinox and solstice, similar to Ollantaytambo ruins. The sun dial was interesting as in shape of Southern Cross and its exactly on the lattitude? line of Machu Picchu 13 degrees below equator. Also when it´s equinox one of the corners sticking out doesn´t cast any shadow. However another corner got knocked off. This was because when they were considering selling Machu Picchu off to a private company Cusqueña beer filmed an advert there concentrating on the sun dial and as the camera went round it it knocked the corners off. No surprise Machu Picchu was soon taken off the market and no more adverts either.
Took them 80 years to build the thing, must have been pretty dedicated. Went ot sun gate, don´t know how i managed it but i thought i´m only here once so make the most of it. More uphill and struggled a bit but made it 45 mins later. Looked even more stunning from there as can see it from a distance.
Got back to Aguas Calientes in the afternoon and bought a touristy t-shirt as in desperate need of clean clothes, then back to the hostel. Heard that the other group in Ollantaytambo were coming tomorrow on the train and seeing Machu Picchu in the afternoon and we´ll all return on the train to Ollantaytambo in the evening to then go to Cusco by coach. Phew!
