After the great robbery and the carnival party atmosphere of Montevideo it was time to head somewhere a little quieter; Colonia del Sacramento, a quaint little town on the way back to Buenos Aires.  I stayed here just one day to walk around the old city before heading out for the night to a karaoke bar... although it was just one day, it was one full of variety.

I had taken the bus to Colonia with Oron, one of the Israeli guys that I had hung out with in Montevideo, who I actually first met when I was in Punta Del Este when he was surrounded by his harem of 20 year old Brazilian girls.  Oron would be my camera man for the day as I am still without photo taking equipment :@  We grabbed some lunch and then took a quick tour of the old city.  Shortly after we set out a shabby black dog started to follow us and continued to do so throughout the entire day despite my best efforts to shake him off.  Eventually I grew to love this dog a little more and Christened him Juan which cemented our relationship further.  I honestly don't think that I could succeed if I spent years trying to train a dog to walk at my side the way this one did; every time I stopped he would stop, and then when I started again he would trot either at my side or closely behind me.  He even waited in the park with us when we played on the swings for an hour or so and then came running up to walk with us once again when we left.  Eventually when we got back to the hostel he realised he could follow us no further and so curled up on the doorstep as a massive rain storm moved in.

The old city itself was cute with cobbled streets, a nice harbour and a lighthouse.  Enough to entertain you for one day, but no more, even with the park, the market, the fairground and Juan.  That evening after pizza at the hostel I got chatting to a guy from Buenos Aires and he kindly took it upon himself to continue with the Spanish lessons I had started in Mendoza.  As I am heading back to BA after Colonia I thought that it would be good to have some new phrases to impress he guys I had met in Mendoza with.  I had it all written down, but unfortunately I accidentally left the piece of paper at the hostel, although my memory didn't completely let me down and I could remember culo roto and pelotudo... neither of which I am going to translate as respectable people such as my parents read this blog (although they both speak Spanish so maybe that doesn't work so well)!  Once I had finished my lessons the karaoke bar was calling. Unfortunately all of the song choices were in Spanish, and although I could probably have followed the worlds and sung along as well as I do in English (ie not very), I was not sure of the melody and thought better of embarrassing myself completely!  One of the girls that was working at my hostel was a big fan of getting up and singing, and a few other people also had a go.  Maybe if Juan would've been there I'd have braved a duet.

By the time we left the bar the rain had started to come down so hard.  I had to take off my shoes and hitch up my trousers as the streets were filled with water.  By the time we got back to the hostel I was drenched from head to toe as if I had been swimming.  It's been a long time since I saw rain quite like that... made me feel very at home!
