First thing this morning - an $8 full English breakfast - marvellous. After stuffing ourselves, we took a walk down the Esplanade to the city centre. This is a nice boarded walk along the sea's edge. However, there are warning signs everywhere about killer sharks, killer crocodiles and killer jellyfish being in the sea! Everything kills you here! Did find one thing funny though - there was a big sign saying "Warning. Beware of Crocodiles in this area" and right next to it was a big children's playground!! It's as though they let the kids get eaten first because they are the tenderist and then the croc's will leave the adults alone! - works for me!

As it happens, it is actually 'Stinger Season" on the Northern beaches. This means that there are loads of box jellyfish out there who's sting can kill you in about 3 minutes! The recommendation if you get stung is to put vinegar on it......if I've only got 3 minutes to live, vinegar is the last thing I'm gonna be thinking about!! There's a good six sessions in 3 minutes!!

In fairness, they do have designated swimming areas where there are stinger nets out to keep the jellyfish away. This isn't guaranteed though, so we may stick to the swimming pools for a while!

After all these warnings of death, guess what we did next? We went to check out the diving and snorkelling tours on the Great Barrier Reef! We're not all there are we?! Lorna then said "What if we see a shark when Sky Diving?".......I just had to picture the scenario, I'm freefalling from the sky at 15000 feet and then from nowhere a big shark is freefalling next to me. I picture him with his big toothed smile, waiting to snap into me as soon as I release my parachute. But then I thought, how will the shark have a parachute, won't his fin get in the way? It was as these questions and scenarios were running through my head that Lorna interrupted my thoughts. She corrected herself and said "sorry, I meant scuba diving". Phew, confusion over with......for now anyway.

We also paid a visit to Woolworth's! This is not the same as a UK Woolworth's, this is a food store instead - a bit like Tesco - confusing! We grabbed a few bits then went onto the Cairns Shopping Mall. Lorna got too excited in here so we had to leave - if I'd have left her alone too long we would be flying home tomorrow!! Another thing, the place was decked out in Christmas decorations - it just doesn't feel right when it's sunny & 30 degrees outside! Bring me the snow!

We went up to Travellers Autobahn where we are picking our campervan up from tomorrow. Would you believe that the guy who ran the office used to be from Retford and used to go drinking in Mansfield & Blidworth!! I didn't believe him at first but then showed me his 6 toes and a video of him with his Auntie! Truth was confirmed! Anyway, because we were probably of the same family somewhere along the line, he threw in a Microwave for free into our campervan! (Normally pay extra for them vans).

We dropped in at the T'internet place next to get phone numbers for a couple of camp sites. We are going to head to Cairns Holiday Park tomorrow (so we can still go diving), then off to Ellis Beach on Thursday and then Port Douglas on Friday. We think this will be followed by Cape Tribulation, Cooktown, Kuranda and the Atherton Tablelands.....but we're not really too sure yet!

After a shower and change back at Calypso, we wen to their bar for happy hour beers. We ten used their free bus to get dropped off at PJ O'Briens Irish Bar. Why hear? They do $5 steaks! You get a 300g rump steak, chips and pepper sauce for $5! You just have to buy a drink as well, which we were going to do anyway! The beers were normal price as well - dunno how they make it pay. It was pretty busy as well of course.
Another bonus was they were showing the India v England one-day match live (although the result wasn't too good). Beer, steak, cricket - fandabbydozey!

It was then back to Calypso to pack ready for tomorrows departure.
