After brekky in the hostel we discovered that today was a bank holiday in Christchurch and therefore most things were shut. We decided that we would just take a walk round town today then.

The main area in the town is Cathedral Square, which is dominated by.....can you guess.....that's right, a giant chess board!! It's true, there's a giant chess board in the middle of the square! Oh, there's also this big Cathedral type thing on the edge of the square as well. The square was never going to be our most popular place as it is an alcohol free zone!! Don't get excited like I did at first, thinking it meant all alcohol was free!! Alas, no, it meant no alcohol allowed - at all!! Can you imagine them trying that in Mansfield?!

We then did the soft bit and had a walk along the Avon river through the Botanical Gardens. We actually stopped by the river and had a picnic, which was nice. After this, we had a walk round the rest of the town for a few hours. There's not that much to do in Christchurch which was good for a change just to walk round without ending up jumping out of a plane or jumping off a cliff or falling down a waterfall! Most pleasant.

We had curry in the hostel kitchen tonight - see the photos to witness chef Lorna at work. We then chilled in our room watching our own TV - luxury, wouldn't you say. Did smell a bit after a while though - blummin' rogan josh!
