It was an 8am start for breakfast this morning as we were being picked up at 9.30 for our trip. There was 14 of us in the group for the first day, which would be reduced to 7 for the last two days. We were the only English in the group, the rest were :
Mo & Suzie from Belgium
A couple from Poland (didn't get their names)
Dena from Hawaii
Stefano from Milan
Thommo from Japan
and
Hadas, Alva, Katrine, Orem & Ifey from Israel.
It is a good mixture and it is the 5 Israelis who will be staying with us for the whole 3 days.
First stop on the trip was at an Orchid & Butterfly Farm. There were some pretty flowers and a few big butterflies, but this was a bit of a yawn for me really. Things got more interesting at our next stop - a snake farm. There were loads of snakes including pythons and cobras. I even had a small snake put on my head which meant that I had a fringe for the first time in years!! The staff also put on a show with the snakes that was really good. They kept pretending to throw the snakes at the people watching which got Lorna very scared. It was quite funny that no-one risked going to the toilet whilst we were there. Whether that was because they were scared of one of our slippery friends being in the bog, or whether they thought I had been and already done my business in there, nobody knows!
We then stopped off at a small hut/lodge to have a rice lunch before we started off on our 10km trek to the Laru village called Huay Kupkap. On the way we stopped off at a waterfall to cool off and do a bit of swimming. Then we continued our trek through some fantastic scenery to the homestay village. Our homestay was a bamboo hut full of mattresses and mozzie nets - basic but brilliant. After a cold water shower the locals cooked us vegetable red curry and rice - it was fine grub!
We spent the rest of the evening watching the moon come up (the real one, not my backside), playing cards and downing a few beer Changs.
