For some odd reason tours going to famous ruins always start at some ridiculous early morning time. To go to Tikal from El Remate is only a 30 minute drive, but the tour van picked us up at 5.30 a.m. When we got to the place we expected it to be swarming with gringos and japs taking endless amounts of photos and listening (or mostly not) to guide stories.

However when we got there we were basically alone until 9am. No real reason to get up so early. We believe its because the van wants to make several trips and nothing to do with the heat or ruins. Anyway, this gave us sufficient time to go up most temples without any other tourists, and to have lunch at the top of one of them.

Tikal itself is quite amazing, although expensive at Quetzal 150 per person ($21 US) in comparison to other places. The size of the temples (up to 65 metres height) is just amazing. If only they cut down more trees to let visitors see what it was really like in Mayan times it would be a top attraction...

Thats all for today sadly unless you want to know more about the Mayan history, etc... For additional information go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tikal
