Up early to climb the Baru Volcano...the highest point of Panama at 3.474 metres. After our treks of Macchu Picchu and the Salar de Uyuni, anything below 4,000 sounds "low and small", but after 4 hours walking we enjoyed equally.

The only problem with this volcano and national park is that the clouds just love it! So its pretty difficult to see anything most of the time except the path and 100 metres of jungle. We were quite lucky during the first hour when the sun was shining strongly, but the rest of the trek the clouds just stuck to us.

In any case, we did manage to see lots of birds (no idea what species but great colours), a woodpecker pecking for about 5 minutes right on top of us until he-she found a huge worm, squirrels playing around, 2 lizards mating and plenty of other fauna.

All in all, its 13 kms from the main entrance to the national park. Normally there is a guard there charging $5 per person, but it seems that he took the day off, so all the better for our economy. We didnt walk all the way up from Boquete in order to save energies for the park, and it was easy enough as a local mini-van dropped us off close to the entrance for $2.

As you can see from the picture we indulged in a small chocolate fondue when we got back to Boquete, although originally we entered the cafeteria to have a fruit salad...wishful thinking. Tonight we will add some more calories by eating in a local restaurant which promises typical panameņan food. Hopefully it wont be a Big Mac.
